SCHOOL YEAR 2014-15 - 1st fourth-month PROGRAM

During the first part of this year, from September to January, we´ll work in Extremadura, in two spots –Medellín, Alcántara- with different urban context. Extremadura is a land located in the southwest of Spain, including Cáceres and Badajoz. Extremadura is a large part of Spain, away from the Mediterranean, Andalucía or the North-South axis (Bilbao-Madrid-Sevilla). A land of emigration and conquerors (Pizarro, Hernán Cortés) was deeply romanized, later occupied by the Muslims and finally gained by Christians to the reign of Castilla in Middle Ages. The emigration to conquest the new world meant wealth to Extremadura, this fact leaded to the construction of Palaces, Monasteries, Convents or Churches. From the late 16th-century to 19th-century, and to the present, the economy of Extremadura has slowly plummeted.
The spots has been chosen because of a sort of problems we can find nowadays, related to the historic context and the appearance of pre-existing constructions.
We understand that is essential to know the spot, also the context of the project, which means to visit the sites. A three or four days bus trip is planned to visit Extremadura, to the sites of the projects proposed. As soon as all the students will be registered the trip will be set.
The aim of this first part is to “struggle” with the site, the pre-existing context, and the landscape, definitely to think about the “circumstance”. Each student must read this particular “circumstance” and define a personal strategy for his project. We must forget the a priori ideas or forms, finding a concrete answer for each occasion. Dealing with the past doesn´t means working like our ancestors means a contemporary solution to the same questions the architects have ever asked to themselves.  A hint is what George Steiner (Grammars and Creation) tells us. He says how the language is inscribed, both in its compound past and its multiple present with its alterations physiologic, temporary and social.
