SCHOOL YEAR 2015-16 - 1st TERM PROGRAM
Previous
presentation · foreword
Our aim this year is to work on the french Languedouc region: Montauban and
Albi in the first term, and in Toulouse in the second term. These cities
are called the french villes roses, because of the pink color of the
brick which constructs most of the buildings. Each student will have to choose
(both terms) the area where to work on the different plots suggested.
1st term/ A project for Montauban · A project for Albi
Montauban
Montauban is the
so called Bastide (the type of city), is the origin of this kind of
cities. The origin of the city is over the river Tarn, soon the faubougs
were added (century XIII-XV). During the XVI century the diverse quartiers
joined (Villebourbon, Villenouvelle, etc.) enclosed into the new
fortifications. The quartiers maintain some original features still today. The
city of Motauban has suffered many wars during past centuries, which destroyed
different parts of the city. Eventually, during the reign of Louis XIII
and the Cardinal Richelieu (1629) starts the final reconstruction. The place
principale (main square), the Cathedral and new convents were erected at
these time.
Some thoughts
about the project plot in Motauban
In the area we
find the Pont Vieux and the Château Renaud. The Château Renaud
is, in origin, a “C” shape structure and after many changes, nowadays is the
current the Ingres Museum. The present status of the square in front the Museum
is due to an sventramento (slice and open the city; voiding) of the area
in front the Church of Saint-Jaques. Into this urban reform the Library, the
History Museum (former Stock Exchange Palace) and the new city hall were added
to the square.
This is the plot
to develop the exercises during this first term: the square besides de Ingres
Museum (where the stairs and lift are) and the former Carmelite Convent. A new
hall for temporary exhibitions connected with the museum Ingres-Bourdelle will
be designed. During the Taller Integrado (workshop) the layout of the
river park and a floating platform will be developed. The functional part of
the project is simple, so the success of the design will be to find the right
urban role of the volume, which will connect the river level and the upper
city, erasing the traffic of the zone.
Albi
This kind of city
is called Episcopal City, not only for the presence of the Saint Cecilia
Cathedral but also because the Bishop was the Lord of the city (After the
Albigensian Heresy to the French Revolution). The whole in composed by the
Cathedral and the Berbis Palace (Episcopal palace until 1791), a great ensemble
of cylinders made in brick over the river Tarn.
Albi, a humble
gallic-roman village at the beginning, was converted into diocese around the
4th century. The crusade against the albigensians made by Innocentius
III reinforced the power of the Bishop on his fight against the cathars (the catharus
or “good men”). A symbol of this power was the construction of the cathedral
and the Berbie palace, both made in brick (fast and cheap construction) during
the years 1282 to 1390 into a late gothic style.
About the
Cathedral: Is a one-bay structure with a ring of chapels which are cylindrical
buttresses, shown at the exterior. Constructed by Dominique of Florence in
1400, in 1480 the tower was finished and the baldachin made in stone was added
in 1515-35. Into the bay, in the middle, at the same time a stone chorus was
made (a church into the church). The interior was painted with the fresco
technique in blue background by italian painters (1509-12)
During the
centuries XVII-XVII the palace Berbie was boosted and then refurbished. A
rococo garden was added over the platform. Eventually the countess of
Toulouse-Lautrec, mother of the artist, granted the Palace Barbie to be
converted into a museum to contain the work of her son. From 1922 more than
2000 works from Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901, born in Albi) are exhibited
there.
Four quarters grew
around the core of the cathedral and palace; Castelviel at the bottom of
the tower, Les Combes and the Pont-Vieux, at the river Tarn
brink, Saint Salvi around the namesake collegiata church and the
Place de la Pile, towards the Cathedral. Plenty of medieval and renaissance
houses remain, as French style hotel (“U” shape houses) do.
Some thoughts
about the project plot in Albi
The plot to
develop the project is the Place de la Pile, at the back of the Church apse.
The church has never been on its own, the current situation is due to the sventramento
or opening made in the area during the 19th century, targeting to isolate the
building to find an ideal view. Before, the building was into a merge of alleys
and houses, some of them attached to the Church. Our present proposal, once
establish the current situation, is to rethink or amend the relation between
the Place (old market square) and the apse of the cathedral. This new relation
will be made by means of a new building, over a portico, to harbor temporary
exhibitions of the close Toulouse-Lautrec Museum. The historic quarter, has
been rightly paved and refurbished by the office of Bernard Huet, finishing in
2005.

OPTIONS
Each student have two options where to work. Albi or
Montauban. The differents requirements and programs are as follows.
OPTION 1: MONTAUBAN
MUSEUM INGRES-BOURDELLE EXTENSION
The area chosen to develop the project lies at the
bottom of the Ingres-Bourdelle Museum, on the little square between
the East facade of the Museum and the former wall of the Carmen Convent.
Close to the Tarn river and the historical bridge at the entrance of the city.
Bank of the river nowadays occupied by parking lots and a road. Many urban features
occur at the place, which the student must understand and interpret.
- The Château-Museum
Ingres-Bourdelle, typical french hôtel arrangement, is, based on
the medieval plinth and massive brick construction a symbol of the city.
- The Ingres Museum itself
in the Château; created due to the grant by the painter Jean-Dominique
Ingres (1780-1867) of many of his work to his own city. Later, an
exhibition room dedicated to the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929)
was added.
- The containing wall
between the city and the river.
- The river park of the
Tarn at the south - with the tributary Tescou and the little island- and
the antique bridge. Will
be part of the Taller Integrado-workshop
In this area -around 1650 sqm- we propose the design
of an extension of the museum, connected with the Château. This building must
help to connect the river bank level and the city and will include the design
of public areas and gardens. The construction will not take up more than 700
sqm. over the square.
The group
(students) will develop the programme of uses at the beginning. A guide for the programme:
- Temporary exhibitions
room/entrance hall 500
sqm
- Conference room for 200 people 200
sqm
- Bookshop 150
sqm
- coffee shop/restaurant 350
sqm
- Restroom -
- Free exterior area -
- Covered exterior area -
Total around 1200 sqm
Maximum
ground floor area 700 sqm
OPTION
2: ALBI
MUSEUM TOULOUSE-LAUTREC EXTENSION
The area chosen for this second option is located
between the apse of the Cathedral and the rear square. This square appeared
because the 19th century sventramenti aiming to isolate the cathedral.
The exercise aims to create different squares, maybe
two, by means of a new building constructed over a portico, containing in the piano
nobile, the extension of the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum.
The area of around
5200 sqm must be rearranged, taking care of the different “faces” with the new
building, the main temporary room.
The group
(students) will develop the programme of uses at the beginning. A guide for the programme:

INTEGRATED
WORKSHOP
1st term integrated
workshop development
The “integrated
workshop/taller integrado” will be held one in three Wednesdays. The aim is to
join different subjects under one design or architectural project. The
architectural design will be developed until architectural draft project
(anteproyecto) into Architectural Design VII, later will be developed in terms
of structural, construction and building installations, together with the
professors of other subjects.
A FLOATING
RESTAURANT and a platform for boats or pier on the Tarn river bank will
be designed. The location is free, but may be interesting to choose a site near
the park area of the Château-Museo Ingres-Bourdelle for those who work in
Montauban and at the bottom of the garden of the palace Berbie-Museo
Toulouse-Lautrec, for those who work in albi.
The next elements
will be developed:
- Floating Platform minimum
250 sqm: 100/150 sqm for the restaurant for a little restaurant/pavilion
and an extra area for embarquement, jetty and store room for boats.
- A bridge joining the
platform and the river bank no less than 15/20 meters long.
The material and
quantity of work to be delivered will be fixed during the development of the
exercise.
